How were our T-shirts created at MerchYou and what is screen printing?

For the sixth year in a row, our general partner MERCHYOU has been taking care of our AutoMatí merch and supplying us with sustainable screen-printed T-shirts for the sixth year in a row. Almost everyone knows the word screen-printing, but few can imagine how the process itself works. So, how are our T-shirts created, and why this technology?

Screen printing is a traditional method of transferring designs onto fabric, known for its durability and rich colors. Whether used to create custom t-shirts, fashion designs, or promotional items, screen printing has become a staple of the textile printing industry. In addition to its popularity and aesthetic appeal, the method also has a rich history and an increasingly important role in the search for sustainability in the fashion and textile sectors.

History of Screen Printing

The roots of screen printing date back to ancient times. The technique itself originated in China during the Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD). However, it was not until the 20th century that screen printing as we know it today developed into a modern, mass-produced technique.

The process itself involves applying ink to the surface of a textile using a stencil called a screen, which is usually made of fine fabric. The areas that are not to be printed are made impermeable, and the ink is applied through the permeable areas using a squeegee and pressure. The technique was originally popular in textile and graphic design, but over time it has spread to other areas such as advertising, art, and even industrial printing.

One of the key moments in the history of screen printing was the introduction of synthetic nylon meshes, which significantly improved the efficiency and precision of the process. In the 1960s and 1970s, artists such as Andy Warhol helped further elevate screen printing as a legitimate art form that was also used to mass-produce artwork. Since then, screen printing has continued to evolve thanks to advances in technology such as automatic printing presses, digital printing, and eco-friendly inks.

Screen Printing and Sustainability

In recent years, there has been an increasing focus on sustainability in the textile and fashion industries, particularly due to the environmental impacts of fast fashion. Screen printing, when done responsibly, can offer more sustainable alternatives to other printing methods, but it does have its challenges and pitfalls.

Traditional screen printing is often considered more sustainable than other methods, such as sublimation or digital printing. One reason is that screen printing requires fewer chemicals and produces less waste during its process. Once the design is created on the screen, the inks can be reused and recycled.

Tens of thousands of participants look forward to May Challenge T-shirts every year.

Conversely, digital printing can require more energy and generate more waste, especially when producing large quantities of garments. Screen printing also allows for more precise control over the application of ink, which minimizes the risk of unnecessary waste. A factor contributing to the sustainability of screen printing is the transition to eco-friendly inks. Inks should be free of PVC and phthalates, which can be harmful to the environment and human health.

A T-shirt that lasts

Screen printing is also known for creating durable and long-lasting designs, which is a key advantage when it comes to sustainability. Screen-printed garments typically last longer than garments printed with other methods. This longevity means that the products are less likely to wear out or fade, leading to less consumption and more frequent replacement. Of course, proper care of printed textiles is also important, which we will discuss at the end.

Choosing the right certified textile also contributes to sustainability, ensuring a longer product life. The more durable the print and fabric, the longer the garment will remain in circulation, reducing the need for frequent shopping and disposal.

Although screen printing requires significant initial preparation, especially when setting up automated machines, the overall energy consumption during production tends to be lower compared to digital printing. Digital printing requires more energy for the printing process itself and for preparing the fabrics. Additionally, many screen printing shops are switching to energy-efficient equipment and solar systems to reduce their carbon footprint.

The challenge of chemistry

Despite its many advantages, screen printing also faces challenges on the path to sustainability. The use of chemical cleaners, especially in traditional printing, can lead to waste and pollution if not handled properly. However, many modern screen printing workshops are adopting sustainable cleaning agents and closed systems to minimize this impact. MERCHYOU also monitors the water that goes to waste and, before it is discharged into the waste, filters it in a two-phase sedimentation process to ensure that no harmful particles are released into the sewer.

So, how do you keep your screen-printed T-shirt alive for as long as possible? The key is proper care. Wash your printed T-shirt at a maximum of 30 degrees and always inside out. Avoid using a dryer, and when ironing, make sure not to apply the iron directly to the print.

We wish you a pleasant and long-lasting time on your bike, on foot, or at a jog!
