General rules for the Bike to Work challenge 2023

The organizer of the Bike To Work challenge is AutoMat, z.s. (civic association) with its registered office at Slezská 11, 120 00 Prague 2.

Conditions of participation and registration

  1. Bike to Work welcomes participants from all over the country over 16 years old.
  2. When registering (on dopracenakole. cz), choose the town which is geographically the closest to you. The results of all competitions will be announced separately for each town. Prize ceremonies will also take place separately in each town.
  3. The participation fee amount depends on the date of registration. In each registration period, the participant may also choose the „Good Cause“ starting fee of which a proportion is intended for sustaining and supporting AutoMat. The price of the fee also includes the participant’s T-shirt (or neckerchief), the opportunity of entering the “T-shirt prize event” and entry to the closing party. All prices include VAT. In the case of the participation fee paid by the employer, the invoice will include a 21% VAT increase.

Participation of teams

  1. To take part in the Bike To Work challenge you must: compose a team of 2–5 participants, register by the last of April, and pay the registration fee. All teams are automatically included in the “Regular team activity” contest. Even individuals may take part – but they can not succeed in categories designed for teams.
  2. One organization may have an unlimited number of teams. The team is registered under one branch of one organization. If, however, a participant cannot find a colleague willing to join in, they can put together a team with anyone else (people from a different branch or organization, friends, family, or a similar enthusiast enlisted on the Bike to Work website).
  3. A team member may quit the team at their request at any moment. The decision is irrevocable; they cannot join the team again. A team member cannot be replaced by a different person during the competition. If only one person is left on the team, they will be moved to the Individual Performance category.
  4. The team can be made up of participants who commute to work, as well as those who work from home.

The course of the challenge, recording of trips

  1. The challenge runs from 1 May to 31 May including the first and last day of the month.
  2. The competition is open to anyone who walks, runs, rides (even an electric) bicycle or uses non-motorized means of transport (this year not only to get to and from work). The maximum number of routes that can be counted in one day is two. The minimum route length is not set this year.
  3. In the case of working from home, you can record any walk/ride/workout. If you do two health walks a day, write them down as a trip there and back. If you do only one, divide it into two parts and write them down and back (in the case of using the application, it is necessary to save the entry in the middle of the path and start a new measurement of the path back).
  4. You can freely switch from one mode of transport to another during the challenge. Each participant regularly records the selected activities in his/her online profile or mobile application.
  5. When recording routes in his/her web profile, the participant enters the type of activity and the distance (or duration) he/she made. The following methods of entering are possible:
    – via the mobile applications Cyclers, Strava, and Na kole Prahou (from the mobile app will play automatically to the web’s profile)
    – entering several completed kilometres into the tab/ calendar in the online profile
    – manual uploading of the GPX file into the online profile from another application
    – filling in typical routes in the online profile
  6. Combined routes (bike+tram, walk+bus…) are OK. However, you can record only the part you performed with your power.
  7. It is possible to record routes manually for a maximum of 8 days back (i.e. e.g. on Monday it is possible to record activities for the past Monday at the latest). After the end of the Bike To Work, activities can be registered no later than June 3, 2023, 23:59.
  8. The announcement of results and award of local prizes shall take place in the town where the participant is registered. The results of the national categories will be announced at the closing party, which will be held in June in Prague. In case of extraordinary circumstances, the winner can be announced only through the website and the award ceremony can be made in person or by mutual agreement in another form.

Competition categories

REGULAR TEAM ACTIVITY

  1. “Regular team activity” category runs from 1 May to 31 May including the first and last day of the month.
  2. The category is announced both at the national and municipal levels.
  3. Prizes in the category are awarded based on a draw. All participating teams that have achieved (after averaging the personal regularity values of all team members) a regularity of 66.6% at the municipal level and 90% at the national level enter the draw.
  4. Personal regularity is counted according to the sample:

the total number of journeys covered by non-motorized means of transport in May
    _________________________________________________________________________________ X 100

twice the number of working days of the individual in May*

    * The minimum number of trips to and from work to reach for is 26 (i.e. 13 working days). If the total number of trips to and from work for a particular person is less than 26 (for example due to long-term leave, etc.), the denominator is automatically substituted with the number 26.

  5. To reach 100% regularity, the number of activities equals double of the number of participants. In the case of long-term leave or illness, when the number of working days falls below 13, 100% regularity cannot be achieved.
  6. Team regularity is counted according to the sample:

the total number of journeys covered by non-motorized means of transport in May by all team members
    ________________________________________________________________________________________ X 100

twice the number of working days of all team members in May*

    * The total number of registered trips of individual team members is based on the actual registered status, if it is at least 26 per individual (see point 4). In the case of a lower number of trips, it is based on the fictitious state of the 26 trips made.

  7. The Local Coordinator will draw at least three winning teams that meet at least 66.6% regularity and will announce and reward them at the June 2023 closing party.
  8. The main organizer will draw twenty-five winning teams that meet at least 66.6% regularity and reward them with free entry for the next team year.
  9. The main organizer will draw five winning teams that meet the condition of at least 90% regularity and will announce and reward them in June 2023.

PERFORMANCE FOR A GOOD CAUSE

  1. The category Performance for a Good Cause will take place from 1st to 31st May inclusive.
  2. Invitation is announced at a national and local level.

  4. Every km covered by individuals by bike, jogging, or by one’s own steam, will be added to the overall amount for the given project.
  5. The total number of kilometres cycled, jogged/covered by the participants will be distributed among the projects to which they have applied.
  6. The local organizer shall announce at the final announcement which pedestrian/cyclist belonging to the given city has contributed most to the development of the selected projects. For this purpose, the organizer relies on the kilometre data entered in any of the above-mentioned ways.
  7. The main organizer will read out at the final announcement which three pedestrians/cyclists throughout the nation have contributed most to the development of the selected projects. For this purpose, the organizer relies on the kilometre data entered in any of the above-mentioned ways.
  8. The main organizer will read out at the final announcement the total amount of km covered by each project. For this purpose, it is based solely on the kilometres measured through apps or GPX files, since the total amount covered in each project will be proportionally distributed among these given projects which have received donations from our partners.

Voting competitions

BIKE EMPLOYER OF THE YEAR

  1. The competition is for teams as well as organizations. Any employer can enter the competition through one of its employees designated as the company coordinator. If the company does not have a coordinator, it can be registered by any other employee. The organization will be registered by sending us answers to a questionnaire on bike-friendly measures. You will find the questionnaire in your member area, after logging in to your online profile.
  2. The questionnaire evaluates how much employers support their employees in riding a bike to work. If the organization has more branches or buildings (locations) where employees work, each building is regarded as a separate competitor.
  3. The title of the Bike Employer of the year will be awarded to the competitor who receives the highest number of points in the questionnaire.
  4. The organization that achieves the highest number of points in the questionnaire can be visited by the local organizer Do práce na kole and, based on the ascertained real level of cycling measures in the given competition entity, will confirm the final winner.
  5. The questionnaire must be filled in by 29 May at the latest.
  6. One of the criteria of this category is whether the competitor has held its internal competition for employees as part of the Bike to Work competition.
  7. The title cannot be awarded to a company that was the winner of two past editions in a given town.
  8. Through participation in this competition a certified European standard for employers can be created for companies supporting their employees commuting to work.

BIKE CITY OF THE YEAR

  1. A bicycle city will be evaluated based on a detailed questionnaire taking into account indicators of the conditions of movement and feelings of cyclists, joggers, and pedestrians in the cities involved. This evaluation takes into consideration an internal analysis of the approaches of each city to the development of sustainable mobility.
  2. The organizer’s committee will assess not only the results of the participants’ questionnaire but also take into account the increase in the number of participants compared to last year, the proportion of participants in the city population, the highest overall regularity in the city, already completed bike projects and perspectives for future development.
  3. Bike City DPNK 2023 will be announced in June 2023 (the exact date to be announced soon). We will then contact the representatives of the cities and associations involved for further information. We will award the first three cities which best fulfil all the given criteria.
  4. The winning city will receive from our side support and motivation to draw new inspiration from abroad.
